Montes Wine Tasting

1. Montes Limited Edition Sauvignon Blanc 2011

Negara/wilayah         : Chile/Colchagua Valley – Leyda Valley

Rekomendasi Pairing: sashimi, salad

2. Montes Limited Selection Cabernet Sauvignon Carmenere 2010

Negara/wilayah           : Chile/Central Valley – Colchagua Valley

Rekomendasi Pairing: daging unggas, ikan

3. Montes Purple Angel 2010

Negara/wilayah           : Chile/Colchagua Valley

4. Kaiken Malbec 2010

Negara/wilayah           : Argentina/Mendoza

5. Star Angel Shiraz

Negara/wilayah           : Amerika/California

Rekomendasi Pairing: medium well steak, pizza, sate, grilled food

6. Napa Angel Cabernet Sauvignon 2007

Negara/wilayah           : Amerika/California

Montes and Dimatique held the Master Class Wine Tasting on Wednesday march 12th 2014 at Pullman Hotel Thamrin, Jakarta. Eduardo Stark, Montes’ Export Manager, was the speaker of the event to introduce this Chile wine to the audience.
Montes also has sister brands in different countries like Kaiken in Argentina, Star Angel and Napa Angel in America. On this occasion, Montes brought 6 wine for us to try: 1 white wine and 5 reds. As a fan of red wine, I can only say: Hallelujah! Here are the reviews:

1. Montes Limited Edition Sauvignon Blanc 2011

Country/region            : Chile/Colchagua Valley – Leyda Valley

This was my first wine. Actually, white wine, especially Sauvignon, is never been my favorite. But I quite like this one, not because of the intensity, but more of its subtlety. From acidity, sweetness, and bitterness, they are all so soft and light. Like a morning kiss. A perfect starter right before dinner. The surprise came from it’s pretty full body.

Montes recommended seafood, but it also depends, what kind of seafood? I’ve tried to pair it with Pullman’s canape, cured smoked salmon, but they’re not a good match. The saltiness of the cured salmon greatly overpowered the Sauvignon Blanc. I guess, salmon sashimi would be perfect. It’s a very fruity wine, very delicate, so I recommends salad as its pairing, with no excessive dressing.

Pairing Recommendation: sashimi, salad

2. Montes Limited Selection Cabernet Sauvignon Carmenere 2010

Country/region            : Chile/Central Valley – Colchagua Valley

Things are getting hot with the second wine, made of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Carmenere. The first aroma I got is the chocolate, vanilla, and blackberry. The red wine has blackberry notes with medium sweetness, acid, and bitterness. It had balanced flavor.

Even though it tasted more intense, the body of this second wine is lower than the Sauvignon Blanc. It’s a flexible and rather, safe, red wine. However, both of them are not really memorable to me.

I paired it with some available sponge cake, but the bitterness of the wine dominated the sweetness of the cake. But, because of its low intensity, the wine should not be paired with red meat. Poultry and fish would be a better choice.

Pairing Recommendation: poultry, fish.

3. Montes Purple Angel 2010

Negara/wilayah           : Chile/Colchagua Valley

The first thing I notice is that the wine has a cool name! Purple Angel. It reminded me of Jimi Henrix with his tunes Purple Haze and Angel. The wine has won my heart, even before I had my first sip.

Purple Angel is a mix of 92% Carmenere and 8% Petit Verdot. FYI, Carmenere is presumed extinct in its original home, Bordeaux, France. But it was revived in Chile, Montes sees it as their signature grape variety, they even call it “Jurassic Park”.

The aroma of the angel was so sweet, vanilla, with a hint of plum. It was clearly an intense, bright wine, with high level of acidity, tannin, full bodied, with dark chocolate and peppery aftertaste.

I found a little contradiction, while the aroma was so sweet, but the Purple Angel tasted very dry. I know it’s a bit hard to describe taste, so I’ll use visual analogy. If the first and second wine is Jennifer Anniston, Purple Angel is Monica Bellucci.

The previously unmatched cured smoked salmon met its pairing now. What more is that this red wine aroused the carnivore in me. Suddenly I craved for red meat: medium rare beef steak or lamb chop would be perfect. This wine always makes me hungry just by recalling the taste.

Pairing Recommendation: red meat, with a lot of black pepper.

4. Kaiken Malbec 2010

Country/region            : Argentina/Mendoza

Let’s move on to Argentina to enjoy Kaiken Malbec. I can smell cherry and a bit of oakiness in it. With low body and acidity, a little smoky flavor, fruit forward, it’s a light and easy red wine, even for beginners.

Remember the sponge cake I mentioned earlier? Kaiken Malbec was proven to be its match for having same level and sweetness, moreover, the acidity of the wine gave the fresher, fruity impression to the cake. I was imagining something fruity, sweet and acid, I was thinking of pasta or pizza with homemade tomato sauce. The cherry aroma also made me want to have a spoonful of black forest.

Pairing Recommendation: pasta or pizza with tomato sauce, black forest

5. Star Angel Shiraz

Country/region            : Amerika/California

After some previous tasting sessions, Shiraz has consistently become my favorite. It makes me wonder, “perhaps I tend to like dry wine.” The first aroma I got from Star Angel was strawberry with a little bit of oak. It had sweet vanilla aroma, but not as sweet as Purple Angel.

It was one of the most unique wine because it had different profile from the typical complex, dry Shiraz with long aftertaste. Star Angel was so intense in the beginning with pronounced sweetness and bitterness, I feel the acidity afterwards. After a few sips, I felt mineral, and acidity that is akin to the vitamin C tablet. The weird thing is, the aftertaste was not intense nor long lasting. This wine was like hit and run, hit you so hard in the beginning and then got into thin air. A quite rude wine!

With pronounced bitterness at the start, this wine would be a good pair with steak, medium well or well done. But, who eat well done steak nowadays anyway? The other options I can think of are something with Mailard reaction, browning, and smoky flavor: perhaps those browning, melted mozzarella, chicken or beef satay, or any grilled food.

Pairing Recommendation: medium well steak, pizza, satay, grilled food.

6. Napa Angel Cabernet Sauvignon 2007

Negara/wilayah           : Amerika/California

It was the last wine of Montes, also the most complex. You can’t smell sweet vanilla scent, instead, you’ll get dry tannin. After a sip, I got pretty high sweetness, with medium acidity, and full bodied. On the second impression, I found gas notes, very complex man! But also fun.

The sensation of this Napa Angel is very interesting because it’s like the exact opposite of Star Angel. The wine felt so sweet, quiet at the beginning, but it had long, complex, and intense aftertaste. The analogy? Your ex-girlfriend. You know what I mean.

Napa Angel is not a light, sweet wine, nor dry like Purple Angel, it’s somewhere in between. Because of the richness and complexity, it’s a bit difficult for me to give any pairing suggestions. Not overly intense meat like pork roast belly or peking duck, perhaps?

Pairing Recommendation: pork roast belly and peking duck

Conclusion
Most of the time, I opted for Shiraz, but now my favorite was clear: Purple Angel. Apart from the cool name, now I’m sure I prefer dry wines. Morever, the wine is able to attarct my inner tiger instinct. I got to have steak tomorrow!

Next, I’m torn between Star Angel Shiraz or Napa Angel Cabernet Sauvignon. Both had contradicting sensation, I found it very interesting.

Does it mean I don’t like the rest of the wine? My friend, this is the beauty of the wine. If a brand has managed to build its reputation and quality, I believe they have no bad products. The issue is: what’s the food you’re pairing it with. I mean, I really love Purple Angel, but if I were to eat sashimi, I opt for Sauvignon Blanc as the pairing (while I’ll take the Purple Angel home).

Montes has proved that they’re not a one trick pony wine company. I had so many flavor and sensation, just from the 6 bottles in the tasting session. This Master Class was fantastic! Dimatique got to have more this kind of sessions, be it with Montes or any other wine makers.

Disclaimer: tasting is a very subjective experience. The notes that I wrote was based on what I felt at the time, also on the experience that I had about flavor. Every one may have different judgement, but whether you agree or not with me, I’d love to hear your opinion on this.

6 Tips to Enjoy Wine for Beginners with Diego Urra

Diego Urra

Words: Edwin Pangestu
Photos: Pulse Communication

Anda pernah melihat botolnya beberapa kali di film The Great Gatsby.

Jangan lupa catat jenis anggur, daerah asalnya, bahkan tahun produksinya.

3. Watch your hand!

That's how you hold the wine glass

4. Swirl the glass

6. Old world VS new world
Seiring dengan perkembangan dunia wine making, kualitas produk new world sudah bisa disejajarkan dengan wine old world.

Seperti yang bisa kita duga, tips terakhir untuk menikmati wine dari Diego adalah, you can go for Lapostolle, that would be a very wise choice.” Untuk melengkapi bahan gertakan agar semakin terlihat meyakinkan, ada baiknya Anda terus membaca Liquivier :)

Oke sekarang Anda telah mengetahui sedikit tentang jenis wine, jenis anggur, posisi tangan, swirling, pairing dan isu old world VS new world. Good luck!

The vast growing number of winehouses in Jakarta might be intimidating to most Indonesians, especially when you attend evenst such as wine dinner. It is perfectly understandable, since we Indonesians don’t have the wine culture.

However, with some few basic knowledge, you can fool others into thinking you’re good at wine. Of course, I’m not a sommelier, that’s why Diego Urra Gosselin, Brand Ambassador & Assistant Winemaker Lapostolle from Chile, helped me to give you 6 tips to enjoy wine for beginners:

1. Know the wine categories
Generally, there are 3 types of wine: red, white, and sparkling. Remember, sparkling wine! Never mention champagne as wine category because champagne is sparkling wine that is produced in Champagne, located to the north east of France.

Red wine is usually served at room temperature while white and sparkling is usually served chilled. Don’t forget, never put any ice cubes into wine!

If you are having wine dinner with girlfriend, wife, or any women who are also new to wine, I recommend rose wine. Other than they might look up to you for knowing more than 3 basic wine, women tend to love the cute pink color of the rose wine. It also tastes sweeter and lighter, easier for women.

2. Know the grape varieties
There are hundreds varieties of grape all over the world. It’s not school, and you’re not meant to know all of the names. I’ll give some of the most popular names, also how to pronounce them to make you look more convincing.

For red wine, try Merlot (mare-lo) or Pinot Noir (pee-know-na-wahr). These two have lighter and easier flavor before you turn to something more intense such as Cabernet Sauvignon (Ca-burr-nay so-veen-yaw), or the drier and more complex (dry is the opposite of sweet in the world of wine) Shiraz (Shi-raz). Some people say you can’t go wrong with steak and Cabernet Sauvignon, but I prefer Shiraz as the pairing of my steak, try it for yourself.

For white wine, Sauvignon Blanc (so-veen-yaw blang) is the perfect starter before you try the more intense, acidic Chardonnay (syar-the-nay). Sparkling wine is usually mix of many grape varieties, but the main characterisitic of the wine is the carbonation, it tastes fizzy, like other carbonated drinks. The color might be similar to white wine, but if you notice the bubbles of air in it, I’m sure it’s sparkling wine.

Carve the name Moët & Chandon into your mind as secret weapon to your bluffs. It is one of the most popular brand of champagne, you’ve seen it several times in the movie, The Great Gatsby. You’ve also heard the brand name sung by Freddie Mercury in the Killer Queen, right at the beginning of the song.

It is best if you order 2 different types of wine so you’ll be able to compare the flavor. Don’t forget to write down the grape varieties, the origin, even the year of the production. After a while, you’ll be able to tell the differences.

Diego added, “For Lapostolle, you’d better try the more affordable Casa series which taste lighter, more fruit forward. Casa is considered as daily wine that you can drink every day, while the more complex, intense (and expensive) Cuvee series, usually drunk once a week.”

3. Watch your hand!
Stare at the glass, look at the color, smell it, take a sip, close your eyes, breathe in and enjoy it like a pro. But don’t break your bluff only because you hold the glass the wrong way, especially for the more temperature sensitive red wine. Hold the stem of the glass, and avoid the bowl so your body temperature won’t affect the wine. This hand position also looks more elegant and sophisticated when you do the toast.

4. Swirl the glass
Wine glasses come in different forms, and they have their own functions. More than just to meet the eye, these glasses are designed to do swirling, to expose the wine to oxygen, to let the wine “breathe”. Swirling allows the wine to express itself better and to let go of the trapped aroma within the liquid.

Do the swirl, especially for red wine, as white wine and sparkling wine don’t need the swirling that much. Just swirl the glass slowly to create small vortex at the center of the glass. Compare the aroma of the newly poured wine and the wine that has been swirled, you’ll know what I mean. “It doesn’t mean that you have to swirl it over and over. I’ve seen some people are doing it excessively,” said Diego.

5. Pairing
Perhaps you have word the magic word, “red wine goes with red meat and white wine with poultry or fish”. Before discussing about this, make sure you sip a little bit of the wine right after you put the food in your mouth to let them combine. This is what we call as wine and food pairing.

This is where the magic happens. Good pairing will synergize the food and the wine, allowing both flavor to reach higher level. But because we don’t have this pairing culture in Indonesia, many people make mistake by eating the whole food, and then drink th wine afterwards.

Back to the pairing, Diego said that the rule is not written in stone. Because the wine pairing is also determined by the ingredients, spices, cooking technique, and other factors. The point is, the flavor of the food and the wine have to be balanced, it means the one’s taste should not overpower the other. “In the end, pairing is very subjective. Don’t be afraid to experiment. If you choose the wrong wine pairing, that doesn’t mean you’re not eating, right? It is not matter of life and death,” Diego laughed.

In this situation, I suggest 2 things. First, order “safe” wine such as Merlot that can be paired with almost any kinds of food. Or second, excuse yourself to the toilet and while others don’t see, ask for recommendation from the sommelier or the wine waiter in the restaurant. This might be your best option since they know better about the food and the wine that they have.

6. Old world VS new world
Old world refers to the countries that have long history of making wine, mostly these countries are in Europe, such as France, Spain, Italy, and Germany. While new world is the wine producer countries outside Europe like Chile, America, Argentina, Australia and Indonesia.  The development of wine making process has allows new world to produce wine that is as good as the old world.

Beginners like us might have difficulties in telling the difference in taste between those two. But if you meet someone who claims that old world wine is absolutely better than the new world, challenge him in a blind test. However, make sure that the person is not an expert sommelier.

As we expected, the last tip from Diego would be, “you can go for Lapostolle, that would be a very wise choice.” To arm yourself with other bluffing strategies, you'd better keep one reading Liquivier :)

Okay, now you know quite a bit about wine categories, grape varieties, hand position, swirling, pairing, and the issue of old world VS new world. All you need to do is memorize these things, and practise drinking wine in front of mirror to make your acting more convincing. Good luck!
